Residential Trends in Architecture.

Design in residential architecture is in transition due to economic and demographic changes. Traditions are being challenged as living styles change to demand new living spaces and building forms. People are now considering building in a new way or either refurbishing, remodeling or reconstructing. new forms, elements, spaces and structures are being sought to express their lifestyle.

This all contributes to a new modern aesthetic. Sculptural elements of walls, roofs, internal and external screen walls, textures in materials, explicit geometry and a new spacial awareness. All this has its roots in early contemporary architecture. The weakness is that the symbiotic relationship with the natural environment is being lost too machines. It is tragic where individuals are looking for affirmation and indentity, contemporary residential design innovation is falling short in a relative sense of place. Social trends and lifestyle living are now not static and we are in a period of great change.

The tragedy is that contemporary design innovation is labouring under the weight of the regulatory law of energy conservation. The thinking on what a dwelling place should be are not just fashionable trends. It is significant that concepts give people freedom to choose how they dwell. They are universal principles of any environment and culture.

Sculptural elements of walls, roofs, internal and external screening walls, textured material patterning, lighting apertures, explicit geometry and new spatial awareness. All of these have their roots in early contemporary architecture. The weakness of this is that a symbiotic relationship with the natural environment has been sacrificed for a mechanical aesthetic. Accompanying this technology is struggling to be efficient and sustainable.

Critical to the design is that the dwelling should feel to be in harmony with the occupants and the environment. The occupants and dwelling should have a symbiotic relationship with the environment. The materiality of the dwelling and the environment together with light permeated spaces will create a sensual experience. With endeavour and skill in the design process, the architect with the client, a spirit of place the Genius Loci can be realised.
